Ripping it up on the open seas on a jet ski

Ripping it up on the open seas on a jet ski

Personal water craft is the posh sounding name for what we like to call jet skis, but whatever you want to call them, we just call think they are great fun in the water around Poole harbour.

What’s totally unique about these jet ski lessons is that they run out of Poole harbour in Dorset, meaning that you will be riding the open seas, rather than a freshwater inland lake. If you know Poole harbour you’ll know that, as the second largest natural harbour in the world, it attracts all sorts of water sports from wakeboarding and yachting to visiting cruise ships and ferry services.

The Sandbanks peninsula area has been dubbed Britain’s Palm Beach by the media, as the area is bursting at the seams with millionaires and the area boasts the fourth highest land price per square foot anywhere in the world. So what better way to have a nosy at all these gated properties than from the water on your jetski?

Don’t worry if you’ve never ridden a jetski before, the fully qualified instructors will show you all the controls before you even get out onto the water. You’ll then start gently in the harbour area (where speeds are restricted anyway), before heading out to the open seas.

The experience takes the form of a safari-style tour, with three client jet skis led by the guide out in front on a jet ski of their own, giving you around an hour and a half to enjoy the sights and whip up some waves too!

Learn to swim in private at this Portsmouth spa

Learn to swim in private at this luxury Portsmouth spa

We’ve never really been that great at swimming. We can remember failing miserably trying to recover a plastic ‘brick’ from the bottom of the school pool whilst wearing pyjamas…and we’ve never understand why we had to wear pyjamas.

Anyway, now we’re older, we love going on holiday and if we can’t be in the mountains we love to be by the sea, so we’ve decided to take dramatic action and learn to swim!

If, like us, you feel a bit nervous and intimidated by the thought of joining a group lesson at your local public swimming pool, we reckon these more discreet courses held at a lovely spa near Portsmouth could be the way to learn to swim as an adult, without feeling in at the deep end.

There are four different packages to choose from: You can opt for a two and a half day or five day course, both with or without bed and breakfast accommodation in a nearby lodge hotel. On the two and half day course, you will have nine one to one swimming lesson and 15 on the five day course. You will also be welcome to use the full range of spa facilities during your course, so you can relax and unwind.

The best thing about the course, is that the lessons are taught on a one to one basis and there is complete privacy, with no spectators or other pool users allowed during your lesson time.

That’s not to say you can’t make a mini-holiday out of it with a friend or partner, as the hotel welcomes partners or friends to join you on a bed and breakfast basis for around £10 extra per night, payable locally.

With courses available all year round and the water heated to a very comfortable 33 degrees, we’re hoping to be front crawling with confidence before we head on our next holiday to Brittany this summer!

Thinking about the kids this summer

Treat the little one to a kids' scuba diving experience this summer

Treat the little ones to kids' scuba diving lessons this summer

Despite the freezing cold wind and rain outside (or maybe because of ?!) we’ve been looking into our summer holiday. If you’re planning to take the family to the beach this summer, how about getting the kids used to being around water with a special introductory junior scuba diving lesson?

Even if they don’t want to take up scuba diving, it’s a great way to get them used to being around water and we reckon it’s also a rather special way to celebrate a birthday too.  To do the scuba mini-course, the children don’t even need to be able to swim and it’s ideal for those aged between eight and 12 years old. Of course, all sessions are led by fully qualified PADI diving instructors who are experienced at teaching kids to dive.

Kids love the idea of getting kitted out in wetsuits and diving gear and it’s an amazing feeling when you take your first breath underwater. They’ll soon start blowing bubbles as they get used to the weightlessness of being in the water. All Bubblemaker kids’ scuba experiences include all the equipment, which is especially selected and adapted to be suitable for children.

The scuba diving for kids experience is also a great present to give, as each voucher is for two children to have a go at scuba diving and the vouchers, currently priced at £39, are valid for a full 12 months at various indoor scuba centres across the country, so they’ll have plenty of time to get organised and do the activity.
